Terrarium, outdoor, indoor & seasonal care bellow.

General Overview

  • Type: Carnivorous plant (Sundew)
  • Size: Small to medium-sized rosettes, typically 5–10 cm in diameter
  • Temperature Range: Ideal: 18°C–30°C
  • Humidity: High, ideally 50%–80%
  • Lifespan: Perennial under proper care

Lighting

  • Full Sun: Drosera collinsiae thrives with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to develop its best coloration and robust growth.
  • Indoor Placement: Position near a north- or east-facing window for maximum sunlight in South Africa.
  • Artificial Light Alternative: Use full-spectrum grow lights for 12–16 hours daily if natural light is insufficient. Keep lights 15–20 cm above the plant.

Terrarium Setup

  • Container:

    • Use a clear terrarium with good ventilation. If placed in direct sunlight, ensure the terrarium has openings to dissipate heat.
  • Substrate:

    • A 50:50 mix of sphagnum peat moss and silica sand or perlite works best. Avoid soil with fertilizers.
  • Watering:

    • Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.
    • Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged by using the tray method.
  • Placement:

    • Place the terrarium near a north- or east-facing window with strong, direct sunlight. If temperatures exceed 30°C, ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Feeding:

    • Feeds naturally on small insects like gnats or fruit flies. If insects are scarce, occasional feeding with diluted fish food or dried bloodworms is fine.
    • Avoid overfeeding to prevent mold. (ONLY if you feed, naturaly captured pray is not a problem)

Indoor Care

  • Lighting:

    • Position near a north- or east-facing window that receives 6+ hours of sunlight.
    • If sunlight is insufficient, supplement with artificial grow lights.
  • Temperature and Humidity:

    • Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 25°C indoors. Use a humidity tray or mist the air if the environment is dry.
  • Air Circulation:

    • Ensure gentle airflow to prevent mold in enclosed spaces.

Outdoor Care

  • Lighting:

    • Place in a sunny spot receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
    • Provide some shade during the hottest midday sun if temperatures exceed 30°C.
  • Watering:

    • Keep the soil consistently moist using the tray method.
  • Feeding:

    • Outdoor plants naturally attract insects and rarely need supplemental feeding.

Seasonal Care

  • Winter: While Drosera collinsiae doesn’t require true dormancy, it may slow down in colder months. Reduce watering slightly but keep the substrate moist. Protect outdoor plants from frost.
  • Spring & Summer: Active growing season; ensure ample sunlight and moisture.

Potential Issues

  • Sunburn: Gradually acclimate plants to full sun to prevent burning.
  • Mold and Fungal Growth: Avoid overwatering and ensure proper airflow.
  • Pests: Rare, but watch for aphids or similar pests. Treat with insecticidal soap or manually remove pests.

With these adjustments for South African conditions, your Drosera collinsiae will thrive indoors or outdoors, offering a spectacular addition to your collection!
