General Overview

  • Type: Carnivorous plant (Sundew)
  • Growth Form: Compact rosette, typically 3–5 cm in diameter
  • Temperature Range: Ideal: 18°C–30°C
  • Humidity: Moderate to high, 50%–80%
  • Lifespan: Perennial under proper care

Lighting

  • Full Sun: Drosera coccicaulis thrives in full sunlight, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to achieve its best coloration.
  • Indoor Placement: Position the plant near a north- or east-facing window in South Africa for maximum natural light exposure.
  • Artificial Light Alternative: If natural sunlight is limited, provide strong full-spectrum grow lights for 12–16 hours a day. Keep lights 15–20 cm above the plant.

Terrarium Setup

  • Container:

    • A clear, well-ventilated terrarium works well for maintaining high humidity. Open terrariums are suitable if placed in a sunny spot.
  • Substrate:

    • Use a 50:50 mix of sphagnum peat moss and silica sand or perlite. Avoid soil with fertilizers, as they can harm the plant.
  • Watering:

    • Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water.
    • Keep the substrate consistently moist using the tray method, ensuring the plant's roots are never waterlogged.
  • Placement:

    • Terrariums should be located in a north- or east-facing window to receive direct sunlight.
  • Feeding:

    • The plant naturally captures small insects such as gnats and fruit flies.
    • Occasional feeding with dried bloodworms or diluted fish food can supplement its diet if insects are scarce. Avoid overfeeding.

Indoor Care

  • Lighting:

    • Place the plant in a north- or east-facing window for strong, direct light.
    • Use artificial lighting as a supplement if necessary, particularly during cloudy seasons.
  • Temperature and Humidity:

    • Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 30°C.
    • Increase humidity with a humidity tray or by misting the air if it drops below 50%.
  • Air Circulation:

    • Provide gentle airflow to prevent fungal issues, especially in enclosed spaces.

Outdoor Care

  • Lighting:

    • Place in a sunny location that receives 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
    • Protect from heavy rains or harsh winds.
  • Watering:

    • Ensure the soil remains consistently moist by using the tray method.
    • During hot weather, monitor closely to prevent the substrate from drying out.
  • Feeding:

    • Outdoor plants will naturally attract insects and may not require additional feeding.

Seasonal Care

  • Winter: Drosera coccicaulis is not frost-tolerant. Protect plants from temperatures below 10°C by moving them indoors or to a greenhouse. Slightly reduce watering during cooler months, but keep the substrate moist.
  • Spring & Summer: Active growing season; provide ample sunlight and water to encourage vibrant growth and dew production.

Potential Issues

  • Sunburn: Gradually acclimate the plant to full sun if it has been in low light to avoid damage.
  • Mold and Fungal Growth: Avoid overwatering and ensure proper airflow, especially in terrariums.
  • Pests: Rare, but aphids or mites may occasionally appear. Use insecticidal soap or manual removal.

With adequate sunlight and proper care, Drosera coccicaulis will flourish in your collection, displaying its vibrant leaves and fascinating carnivorous nature!
