Rooted mean that this plant was cultivated in soil and sent to you in soil

Why do we offer this plant in soil?

Our research here at our facility reveals that plants previously grown in soil adapt more quickly to aquatic environments compared to those cultivated in regular rockwool pots. We attribute this to the closer resemblance to their natural evolutionary conditions.

What's the alternative to soil-planted plants?

  • The standard option is plants potted in rockwool, commonly available at your local aquatic store.
  • Additionally, during the summer months, we also provide submerged plants for most species.

Care sheet for Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae, commonly known as "New Zealand Micro Sword" or "Lilaeopsis":

Common Name: Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae

Plant Description: Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae is a low-growing, grass-like plant that is native to New Zealand. It is a popular choice for planted aquariums and aquascapes due to its carpeting effect, as it forms a lush, dense carpet of grass-like foliage that can create a natural and visually appealing foreground in the aquarium. The leaves are narrow, grass-like, and typically green in color, and the plant can grow to be around 5-15 cm (2-6 inches) tall, making it suitable for foreground or midground placement in the aquarium.

Lighting Requirements: Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae typically prefers moderate to high lighting levels of at least 2-3 watts per gallon of aquarium water or around 50-100 PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) for optimal growth and carpeting effect. Providing a quality aquarium light with a color temperature in the range of 6500K to 7500K will help promote healthy growth and maintain its green coloration.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 18-28°C (64-82°F)
  • pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Hardness: Soft to hard water, 2-15 dKH

CO2 Requirements: CO2 supplementation is not always necessary for Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae, as it can thrive in aquariums without added CO2. However, providing a consistent supply of carbon dioxide through a CO2 injection system or liquid carbon supplement can promote faster growth and denser carpeting. If opting for CO2 supplementation, it's important to monitor CO2 levels and ensure they remain within the optimal range of 20-30 mg/L.

Nutrient Requirements: Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae is a moderate feeder and requires a nutrient-rich substrate and regular fertilization to thrive. A nutrient-rich aquarium substrate or the use of root tabs can provide essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and trace elements. Additionally, regular dosing of a complete liquid fertilizer that contains macro and micronutrients will help ensure that the plant has access to all the essential nutrients it needs for healthy growth.

Planting and Propagation: Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae can be propagated by runners, which are horizontal stems that grow along the substrate and produce new plants. To propagate, simply plant individual runners into the substrate, making sure they are securely anchored in the substrate to allow them to root and form new plants. Proper spacing between individual plants is important to allow for healthy growth and prevent overcrowding.

Special Care: Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae is generally easy to care for, but it may require occasional pruning to maintain its carpeting effect and prevent it from growing too tall and shading other plants in the aquarium. Regularly trim and remove any dead or yellowing leaves, and ensure that the plant has enough light and nutrients to promote healthy growth and prevent nutrient deficiencies or algae growth.

In conclusion, Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae is a beautiful and versatile carpeting plant that can create a lush and natural foreground in a planted aquarium. With moderate to high lighting, proper water parameters, nutrient supplementation, and regular maintenance, it can form a dense carpet of grass-like foliage, adding a stunning visual element to any aquascape. Happy planting!
