Micranthemum umbrosum, also known as baby tears, is a popular aquatic plant in the hobby of planted aquariums. Here is a care sheet for this plant:

  • Lighting: Micranthemum umbrosum requires moderate to high lighting to thrive. Provide at least 2 watts per gallon of full-spectrum lighting for 10-12 hours a day.

  • Substrate: This plant prefers a nutrient-rich substrate that will provide it with the necessary nutrients for growth. A substrate with a high content of organic matter and minerals will be beneficial. Sand or gravel with a small grain size will also work well.

  • CO2: Micranthemum umbrosum will benefit from CO2 supplementation. If you do not use CO2, make sure to provide good water circulation to allow for proper gas exchange.

  • Fertilization: Micranthemum umbrosum requires regular fertilization to maintain healthy growth. A complete liquid fertilizer with macro and micronutrients should be added regularly according to the instructions on the product label.

  • Water parameters: Micranthemum umbrosum prefers slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. The water temperature should be maintained between 68°F and 82°F, with a hardness of 3-8 dKH and a nitrate level below 20 ppm.

  • Pruning: This plant is a fast grower and will require regular pruning to maintain its shape and prevent it from overtaking the aquarium. Trim the stems close to the substrate to encourage bushy growth.

  • Propagation: Micranthemum umbrosum is easily propagated by taking stem cuttings and planting them in the substrate. Plant the cuttings about 1-2 inches apart to allow for room to grow.

  • Pests and Diseases: This plant is relatively hardy and is not prone to pests or diseases. However, it can be susceptible to algae growth if the lighting or fertilization is not balanced.

By following these care tips, you can ensure that your Micranthemum umbrosum thrives and adds beauty to your aquarium.
