Peperomia prostata, commonly known as the 'String of Turtles,' is a small, trailing plant with uniquely patterned, round, succulent-like leaves. Its leaves resemble turtle shells with intricate green and silver markings, making it a popular choice for indoor gardeners. This plant thrives in humid, low-light environments, making it perfect for terrariums.

Care sheet:

Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate leaves. In a terrarium, placing it near the top or on the side ensures it gets enough light without being exposed to too much heat.

Temperature:
Ideal temperatures range from 18°C to 24°C. Keep the plant away from cold drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations, as this can stress the plant.

Humidity:
Peperomia prostata thrives in high humidity, making it an excellent candidate for terrariums. Aim for 60-80% humidity, which can be naturally maintained in a sealed or partially sealed terrarium.

Watering:
Water the plant when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the soil has good drainage. In a terrarium, moisture will naturally accumulate, so water less frequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil:
Use a well-draining mix, such as a cactus or succulent blend, combined with some perlite to increase aeration. This helps prevent the roots from sitting in excess moisture.

Fertilizing:
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. In fall and winter, reduce or stop fertilization as the plant enters its dormant period.

Propagation:
Peperomia prostata can be propagated easily from stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem just below a node, remove the lower leaves, and place the cutting in water or well-draining soil. It should root within a few weeks.

Common Issues:

  • Yellowing Leaves: Often a sign of overwatering or insufficient drainage. Ensure the terrarium is not too humid and the soil is not constantly wet.

  • Leggy Growth: Insufficient light can cause the plant to stretch. Ensure it gets enough indirect sunlight.

Final Tip:
Regularly monitor the humidity and moisture levels in your terrarium, as 'String of Turtles' prefers a balance between a moist atmosphere and well-drained soil.
