🌿 Staghorn Fern Plug Care Sheet (Platycerium bifurcatum) 🌿

Staghorn ferns are stunning epiphytic plants that thrive mounted on wood or grown in baskets. With proper care, your small plug in a pot will mature into a beautiful, cascading fern! 🌱

General care

🌞 Light

Bright, indirect light is best!
🚫 Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the fronds.

💦 Watering

🔹 Water the plug once or twice a week in room-temperature water.
🔹 Let excess water drain completely to prevent root rot.
🔹 Increase watering in hot, dry weather and reduce in cooler months.

🔹 Decrease waterin in winter.

💡 Mist occasionally for extra humidity!

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

✅ Prefers 18°C – 30°C (ideal for indoor spaces).
✅ Enjoys 50%+ humidity—great for bathrooms, terrariums, or misting setups!

🚫 Avoid exposure to cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C. Older plants can handle lower temperatures.

🌱 Mounting & Growing Medium

🔹 Can be mounted on wood, cork, or tree bark with sphagnum moss.
🔹 Can also be grown in a well-draining potting mix (orchid bark, sphagnum, and perlite).

💡 If mounting, secure with fishing line or breathable fabric until roots attach!

🍃 Fertilizing

🌿 Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (¼ strength) once a month during spring & summer.
🌿 Reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.

⚠️ Common Issues

Brown tips? – Low humidity or under-watering.
Black spots? – Overwatering or poor air circulation.
Yellowing? – Too much sun or inconsistent watering.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

🔹 Remove dead or damaged fronds with clean scissors.
🔹 Do NOT remove the brown shield fronds—they help absorb nutrients and keep the roots wet and protected!

With patience and care, your staghorn fern plug will grow into a magnificent, statement plant! 🌟

Happy growing! 🌿✨
