Vallisneria gigantea, commonly known as Giant Vallisneria or Giant Jungle Val, is a popular aquatic plant in the aquarium hobby. These plants are appreciated for their graceful, ribbon-like leaves and their ability to oxygenate and clarify water. Here's a care sheet to help you maintain Vallisneria gigantea in your aquarium:

1. Tank Requirements:

  • Size: Vallisneria gigantea can grow quite tall, so it is suitable for larger aquariums. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended.
  • Substrate: Use a nutrient-rich substrate to promote healthy root development. Vallisneria gigantea can be planted directly into the substrate.

2. Lighting:

  • Provide moderate to high-intensity lighting. Vallisneria gigantea can tolerate a range of light conditions, but brighter light will encourage more robust growth and vibrant green coloration.

3. Temperature and Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: Keep the water temperature in the range of 72-82°F (22-28°C).
  • pH Level: Maintain a pH level between 6.5 and 8.0.
  • Water Hardness: Vallisneria gigantea can adapt to a wide range of water hardness, but a general range of 3-15 dKH is suitable.

4. Water Flow:

  • Provide moderate water flow in the aquarium. Vallisneria gigantea can tolerate a range of flow rates, but too much current may cause the plants to bend or break.

5. Propagation:

  • Vallisneria gigantea reproduces through runners. New plants will develop at the end of these runners, and they can be separated and replanted in the substrate to propagate the plant.

6. Feeding:

  • Vallisneria gigantea absorbs nutrients through its roots, but it can benefit from a substrate fertilizer or liquid fertilizer. Ensure that the fertilizer contains essential nutrients like iron.

7. Pruning:

  • Trim old or damaged leaves regularly to encourage new growth. Use sharp scissors to trim the leaves close to the base, being careful not to damage the plant's roots.

8. Tankmates:

  • Vallisneria gigantea can be kept with a variety of fish and invertebrates. Avoid keeping it with herbivorous species that may graze on the leaves.

9. Disease and Pests:

  • Vallisneria gigantea is generally hardy, but it may be susceptible to algae growth on its leaves. Ensure good water quality, proper lighting, and nutrient levels to prevent algae issues.

10. Special Considerations:

  • Vallisneria gigantea can tolerate a wide range of water conditions, making it suitable for both freshwater and brackish aquariums.

By following these guidelines, you can create a suitable environment for Vallisneria gigantea to thrive in your aquarium. Regular maintenance and monitoring of water parameters will contribute to the long-term health and beauty of these plants.

***PLEASE NOTE - VALL when transported for periods greater than 12 hours can begin to brown slightly, particularly on the outer leaves. This is normal and removing those leaves upon receiving your plants tends to speed up new growth with no damage to the plant as a whole.
